Freight Risk RadarGeopolitical chokepoint pulse

How global events — Iran tensions, Red Sea attacks, canal disruptions — are affecting the supply chain that feeds US logistics. Curated from public maritime advisories (UKMTO) and shipping news; reviewed weekly.

Strait of Hormuz

Persian Gulf

High risk

Roughly 20% of global oil transits this strait. Iran-related tensions and tanker incidents have kept war-risk insurance premiums elevated.

Impact: Direct diesel & jet fuel price pressure. Sustained closure would spike US retail diesel within 1–2 weeks.

Red Sea / Bab el-Mandeb

Horn of Africa

High risk

Houthi attacks on commercial shipping have forced major carriers (Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM) to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope, adding 10–14 days transit.

Impact: Container freight rates Asia→Europe remain elevated. Some US-bound transhipment also affected.

Suez Canal

Egypt

Elevated

Canal physically open but transit volumes down ~50% versus 2023 baseline due to Red Sea rerouting. Egyptian government has reduced tolls to attract returning traffic.

Impact: Indirect: container availability shifts, port congestion in Mediterranean and N. Europe.

Black Sea Grain Corridor

Eastern Europe

Elevated

Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to disrupt grain and oilseed shipments. Insurance is available via Ukraine corridor but premiums remain high.

Impact: Indirect: animal feed and edible oil pricing globally; some US grain export competitiveness shifts.

Panama Canal

Central America

Low risk

Canal Authority has lifted drought-related transit restrictions following lake level recovery. Booking slot availability normalised.

Impact: No current trans-Pacific freight disruption.

US–Mexico Rail/Truck Border

North America

Low risk

Cross-border freight flowing normally. Nogales, Laredo, and El Paso processing at near-normal commercial lane volumes (see live data above).

Impact: Standard delays only; nearshoring traffic continues to grow.

This dashboard gives commercial truck drivers fast access to live data they actually need on the road. Border crossing wait times are sourced directly from the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Border Wait Times API and show current commercial vehicle lane delays at the highest-volume US land ports of entry including Laredo, El Paso, Detroit, and Buffalo.

Weather hazard alerts come from the National Weather Service (NWS) and are filtered for events most dangerous to commercial vehicle operators: blizzard and winter storm warnings, high wind warnings, dense fog advisories, and ice storm warnings. All data refreshes every 60 seconds automatically.

The DOT Carrier Lookup connects to the FMCSA SAFER database to pull carrier safety ratings, inspection history, authority status, and insurance information for any USDOT or MC number.
